And Then There Was Blood

To paraphrase the CEO of Hair Club for Men (a group I'm sadly eligible for membership in): "I am not only an occasional horror film blogger, I also dabble."

Back in July, a group of friends and I participated in the 48 Hour Film Festival for the second consecutive year. For those who do not know what that is: it's an annual event/contest where people have 48 hours to conceive, shoot and edit a short film between 4 to 7 minutes in length. To insure no one cheats and starts ahead of time, you are not given your genre before shooting begins. Additionally, you are also assigned a prop, character and line of dialogue you must integrate into your film. The films are screened and the viewers vote for the best.

We did not win.

Let me add as a preface that this was written and directed by a total of four people (three friends and me) and I had a very minor role in the editing process. I think the percentage play out and I'd say about a quarter of the film is really indicative of my style/personality/what have you. I was pushing for more of an emphasis towards comedy. I could spend all day critiquing it (a seven minute short shouldn't start with one minute of conversation, et cetera) but for the amount of time spent on it and the sleep deprivation we dealt with, it turned out okay.

Here are the elements that we needed to incorporate into the film:

Genre: Horror
Prop: Junk mail
Character/Profession: Alex Fillbert, Champion
Line of Dialogue: "How was I supposed to know"

Here's the link to the short (sorry it's not embedded), please allow a short while for it to load:

And Then There Was Blood

Finally thanks for the few who came to the "controversial" screening.
